Back-to-school season means shopping for school supplies and getting back into routines, but it is also a good time to double-check your insurance coverage. If you or someone on your insurance policy is heading back to school, it is important to make sure you have the correct coverage.

Use this checklist to spot possible coverage gaps before the school year begins.

Back-To-School Checklist

Auto Insurance

  • Confirm where the vehicle will be kept: If a student takes a car to campus, tell your insurance agent where it will be kept during the school year.
  • Review who is listed as a driver: Make sure the policy states who will be driving the vehicle.
  • Check liability and physical damage coverage: Review liability limits, comprehensive, collision, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.

Renters or Homeowners Coverage

  • Make an inventory of the items in your space: In case of a fire, theft, or other liability concerns, create a list of electronics, furniture, bikes, clothing, textbooks, and other valuables.
  • Consider renters insurance for off-campus housing: Renters insurance can help protect personal property and may include liability coverage.
  • Schedule high-value items if needed: Laptops, TV’s, cameras, and other expensive items may need additional coverage.

Health Insurance

  • Find providers near school: Find nearby doctors, urgent care clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies included in your plan.
  • Keep insurance information available: Make sure the student has a current insurance card and knows where to go for routine visits, urgent care, and emergencies.
  • Check prescriptions: Confirm medication coverage and access to pharmacies near campus.

Liability Coverage

  • Review liability limits: Liability coverage may help if a student accidentally damages property or someone is injured in their living space.
  • Ask how coverage applies off campus: Coverage can be different depending on whether the student lives in a dorm, apartment, or house.
  • Consider adding an umbrella policy: Families with younger drivers, rental housing, or other liability concerns may want to ask about extra protection.

Additional Coverages to Ask Your Agent About

  • Tuition insurance: May help if a student needs to withdraw from school for a covered reason.
  • Travel coverage: Can be used for studying abroad, long-distance students, or frequent travel home.
  • Life insurance: Families may want to review beneficiaries and overall protection needs as part of their annual insurance checkup.

Protect What Matters Most

Before the school year starts, take some time to review policies, update addresses, confirm coverage limits, and save important insurance documents where they are easy to find. If anything changes, such as a new car, new housing, new school, new prescription, or new valuables, contact your insurance agent to make sure you still have the correct coverage.
